福島医大卒業後、群馬大学にて内科臨床医としてキャリアを始めるも医師7年目にいったん臨床医としてはピリオドを打ち、日本を去り英国オックスフォード大学に就職。数多くの研究業績を発表し、オックスフォード大学においてKATPチャネル遺伝子異常に伴う新生児糖尿病/DEND症候群の治療法の発見に寄与。現在、母校の福島県立医科大学、病態制御薬理医学講座(旧・薬理学講座)の主任教授として糖尿病、肥満生活習慣病研究ならびに新生児糖尿病の研究者として奮闘する一方で臨床医としても糖尿病・肥満治療に従事している。
