下部直腸がんに対しては、術前放射線化学療法を行った後、腹腔鏡下直腸切除を行い、可能な限り肛門温存手術(永久人工肛門を作らない手術)を行ってきた。再発の少ない、機能温存手術を心がけている。肛門操作を伴う括約筋間直腸切除術などは、大腸全摘術症例において日本をリードしている兵庫医科大学の、高度な肛門操作技術を応用、発展させている。
痔瘻を含む直腸肛門良性疾患の手術も多く手掛けている。完全直腸脱に対しては、腹腔鏡下直腸固定術。便失禁に対して、仙骨刺激装置埋め込みを行っている。
遺伝性大腸癌を専門に研究・臨床に携わってきた。海外の研究者と密接な交流を行っており、数々の共同研究に参加してきた。リンチ症候群・家族性大腸腺腫症をはじめ、種々の遺伝性大腸癌の診断(遺伝子診断を含む)・サーベイランスを行なっており、また、専門的立場から、予防的大腸全摘術を含み、大腸癌に対する過不足ない手術を行なっている。
