1983年より大阪大学で産婦人科医師としてのキャリアを開始。大阪大学で10年、英国留学2.5年、金沢大学で13年間勤務し、2012年金沢医科大学産科婦人科教授に就任。子宮頸がんとその原因であるヒトパピローマウイルス（HPV）研究、HPVワクチンや検診システム開発に携わる。臨床・研究において日本をリードしている。最近は、がん免疫療法や漢方薬治療の可能性を明らかにする研究も進めている。
